Interior
 
Under Rhode Island Law anyone working on a dwelling built before 1978 has to have one of the 3 levels of lead mitigation training.
 
1) 3 Hour Lead Hazard Mitigator
     
 

 

Spot repair where damage is less than 30 sq. ft. per dwelling unit and 6 sq. ft. in common areas
 
No more than 8 damaged components per unit
 
Windows and doors do not count as damaged components
 
Cannot replace windows with this training
     
2) 40 Hour Licensed Lead Hazard Reduction Contractor is required when:
     
 
Property has been issued a Notice of Violation from the Department of Health
 
Licensed child-care facility
 
Funding agency and/or property owner specifically requires this level of lead hazard reduction
 
Owner has been cited by DOH within recent 7 years for significant lead poisoning of 3 or more children
     
3) 8 Hour Licensed Lead Safe Remodeler/Renovator is required on:
     
 
All other facilities not required to utilize Lead Hazard Reduction Contractor
 
Anyone replacing windows must have at least this level of training
     
 
Exterior
 
Under Rhode Island law all exterior painting of pre-1978 structures, including residential, commercial and industrial, must be done in accordance with RI Dept of Environmental Management Regulation #24.
 
DEM has a list of certified exterior painters on their website.
